Conway Machine, Inc., along with other Arkansas manufacturers, recently sat down with Governor Mike Beebe and his cabinet members to discuss the workforce crisis now occurring in Arkansas and across the U.S. Everyone in attendance expressed the same concern: the lack of a skilled labor force is either prohibiting their company from growing at a faster rate and/or is costing the company significant revenues.
The event was coordinated by the Arkansas State Chamber and Associated Industries of Arkansas. Many good ideas were passed around to suggest solutions to this urgent problem. The biggest take-away was for the manufacturers themselves to become more involved in the local school and show students that manufacturing is a promising, rewarding and lucrative industry to join.
On Sunday, the towns of Mayflower and Vilonia, Arkansas were hit by an EF4 tornado. Unfortunately, some of our Conway Machine family was directly impacted. One employee suffered severe damage to his home. Another lost his home completely. (He also lost his home to a tornado in 2011.) We are very thankful and relieved to report that our employees and their families survived and are in good condition.
The Conway Machine family is pulling together to support our friends in this time of need. If you have any questions about how you can help, please email Rachael (firstname.lastname@example.org).
You can also donate to a local relief fund: http://www.katv.com/link/485805/tornado-relief-form
To get an idea of the damage, here is a news report featuring our Operations Manager. He tells the story of how he and his family survived:

The management team at CMI traveled to the Governor's Mansion in Little Rock, AR today to accept the Governor's Award for Excellence in Global Trade presented by Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe. Vice President of Sales Rachael Cox accepted the award and gave a short acceptance speech in which she thanked the Governor along with several State and Federal agencies including the Arkansas World Trade Center, the Small Business Administration, Arkansas Manufacturing Solutions and the U.S. Commercial Service for their work in assisting Conway's growth in exports.
When faced with tough economic times during the Great Recession, Conway Machine doubled down and invested in their sales and marketing efforts, especially internationally. Over the past few years, Conway Machine created new marketing materials in several different languages, increased its international web presence and exhibited at the largest trade show in the Print/Packaging Industry, DRUPA, held in Dusseldorf, Germany every four years.
The hard work paid off! Conway Machine has grown its international sales by 19%, with 2012 being the best sales year in over a decade.
Conway Machine, Inc. recently returned from exhibiting at the Odyssey Expo in Nashville, TN. The Expo is sponsored by IADD-FSEA, of whom Conway is a proud member. The Expo is a great chance to learn more about die cutting and the industry as a whole. There are learning sessions, product demonstrations, and an awards banquet to top it all off.
